MSI SPATIUM M482 compared to older Solid State Drives

Solid state drives have changed quite a bit over the years. I spend a lot of time editing videos, so I'm always dealing with large files and need a lot of fast storage. I recently did a new PC build, and with that, I got a new SSD for the operating system. This particular drive, the MSI SPATIUM M482, came bundled with my motherboard as a bundle. It uses a PCIe Gen 4x4 interface with the NVMe 1.4 protocol. For the 2 TB model, MSI claims a sequential read speed of up to 7,300 MB/s and a sequential write speed of up to 6,400 MB/s. MSI X670E Gaming Plus Wi-Fi Motherboard Review

In this article I'm reviewing the MSI X670E Gaming Plus Wi-Fi motherboard! Let's take a look at what you get and its features. First off is my video on the subject. It's highly detailed and might cover things I don't mention in this article. What's In The Box? Quick start guide, SATA cables, M.2 clips, stickers, and Wi-Fi antenna included in the box. You get a quick start guide, but sadly no paper manual is included. I don't generally find much use in paper manuals, but motherboards are one of the few exceptions.  You get two SATA cables, some cable stickers (which are cute but not essential), MSI's custom M.2 clips, and a one M3 screw. These clip style screws are designed to be easier to use than the tiny standard screws. The PC build took a wrong turn due to USB 3.0 headers.

I recently started a new PC build, and while it's mostly been going okay, I've run into a couple of snags that I thought I'd share. These are the kinds of things that remind you that building a PC isn't always as simple as building with Legos, as I have said and some others might say.  I made some... interesting choices. For example, I initially went with a ~90mm heatsink for the AMD Ryzen 9900x CPU due to size concerns around the socket and the depth of the case. I realized pretty quickly that a 120mm would probably be better, at least for keeping things quiet. The smaller one's good enough to get things up and running, though. The problem with buying PC Components Online

Around Black Friday 2024 I purchased most of the components for a new PC build. My old system, sporting an Intel i7-6700 from around 2015, has been a reliable workhorse, but it's showing its age for creative tasks like video editing. I did throw in an RTX 4060 8GB back in March of 2024. At the time, there weren’t a lot of other appealing options that supported hardware based AV1 encode/decode, but it did hold me over for a while in the old PC.  The video covers this topic in more detail. AMD 9900x when TDP limited to 45 watts.

 I found the max TDP setting in MSI's bios and currently have my 12 core 9900x set to 45 watts. 😄 Looks like it is capped to 60 actual watts. With CPU ID's stress test the 9900x TDP limited is still a sizable portion of a 16 core 5950x score.  CPU ID and HWMonitor when the 9900x is TDP limited to 45 watts. Also, I'm surprised that PBO was set to enabled by default. At least from what I could discern from the BIOS at the moment. It wasn't set to AUTO. Is this a thing for X670E motherboards or MSI? Anyways, it's neat you can adjust settings toward cool and quiet rather than the opposite for people that like it. This is making me want a second current era computer to mess around with and one set up for full reliability and work. Component makers, let's collab? 🙏 A test bench build would be super useful.
